HTMLText_A4F9E32B_B069_1BC4_41A5_4AF36E8BC693.html = QUEER CULTURE OF THE LATE 20TH CENTURY
Traversing the path paved by “The Beat Generation”, known for challenging societal norms post WWII, this selection from the MOCA Permanent Collection highlights the trailblazers of the queer Community in the ‘GOs and ‘7Os, featuring mostly works from the Norman E. Fisher Collection at MOCA Jacksonville.
A Jacksonville native, Norman Fisher was deeply connected to the New York art scene amassing a collection of works and ephemera by artists from the Pop and Conceptual Art movements of the late sixties and seventies. Andy Warhol, a catalyst for the Pop Art movement, in many ways encouraged and facilitated othered groups to come to the forefront of the artworld; particularly the LGBTQIA+ community. Each of the artists and performers in this exhibition are in some way connected to Warhol, whether it be starring in his films, a columnist in his magazine, Or modeling for his prints.
Political activists, performers, and artists of this generation such as Jackie Curtis, Marsha P. Johnson, Jimmy DeSana, and Lance Loud rejected and challenged the heteronormativity of mainstream America. This exhibition celebrates these queer cultural icons that allowed for the LGBT QIA+ community to become more visible and in whose footsteps the Community continues to build on today.
